High street retailer and online super store Debenhams, have helped us in our quest to find the best selling toy of all time by undertaking an in depth study into what made the cash registers ring the most, over the last fifty years of festive spending.

While five decades may not exactly be ‘all time’, the research does still provide a fascinating insight into what children over the years requested from Santa and what parents actually bought their demanding little offspring.

Surprisingly some of the vintage toys that made the top ten on Debenhams retro list, also feature on the superstores predicted best sellers for this Christmas, proving that kids haven’t changed that much over the years, despite the perceived corruption of their souls by the evil known as technology.

1. Cabbage Patch Kids

It’s official, the best selling children’s toy of all time is the excruciatingly cute, chubby chopped, Cabbage Patch Kid’s. Currently celebrating their 30th anniversary the ‘kid’s’ were so popular during the Christmas of 1983 that parents literally came to blows trying to secure one of the years ‘must have Christmas toys’.

Thirty years on the dolls are still available to buy today, with the modern reincarnation retaining all the sickening cuteness of the original, which are now much sought after collectables.

2. Rubiks Cube

Invented in 1974 by deranged Hungarian professor Erno Rubik, the Rubiks Cube developed an almost cult like following amongst children and adults alike during the sizzling seventies, providing unsurpassed satisfaction when solved and frustration and despair for those who just couldn’t do it.

Over 350 million of the devilishly tricky game cubes are believed to have been sold to 3D combination puzzle fans the world over, cementing its position as the second most popular toy of all time.

3. Monopoly

Originally invented as an educational tool to help explain America’s complicated tax system, Monopoly quickly turned into a game of greed, corruption and oppressive capitalism, which penetrated the heart and soul of family life the world over.

The classic board game is now available in a staggering 550 varieties and counting, the latest Walking Dead version has to be seen to be believed and could well be the craziest interpretation of Monopoly that we have ever played.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back, well actually they never went away, teenage mutant action figures have been a perennial best seller since their inception in the late 1980’s.

The anthropomorphic teenage turtles have captured the imagination of children across the globe and since their original comic book appearance have starred in several movies, video games and their very own TV series, incidentally the action figure toys are also predicted to be a best seller this Christmas, a well deserved position four on the all time top ten list.

5. Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story

It was the Spring of 1996 when British cinema goers first heard the immortal words “to infinity and beyond”, spoken by Buzz Lightyear, one of the main characters in the children’s movie Toy Story.

6.Barbie the Best Selling Doll

Barbie was born on the 9th March 1959, conceived by American entrepreneur Ruth Handler, who spotted a gap in the market for an adult bodied doll for children, when previously most dolls were based on infants.

Barbie soon became a best seller and the brand was further enhanced by the addition of her boyfriend Ken and a whole plethora of outfits and accessories, cementing her position as the sixth best selling toy of all time.

7. Teletubbies best soft toy

Yet another doll has made it onto the top selling toy’s of all time list, this time based on the rather surreal children’s TV show the Teletubbies.

The Teletubbies dominated pre-school children’s TV from 1997 to 2001 and the soft toy dolls based on the show’s principal characters Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa, Po and Noo Noo found their way into many an excited child’s Xmas stockings during this period, making it the 7th best selling toy of all time.

8. Furbies - best tech toy

The only hi-tech electronic toy to make it onto the top ten best sellers is the ubiquitous Furby, launched in the Christmas of 1998, since then the Furbies have sold an estimated 80 million units across the globe and were amongst the best selling toys for Xmas 2012.

For 2013 the release of the new Furby Boom app, should ensure that the interactive robot pet will have yet another successful holiday season and take one more step closer to world domination.

9. Sylvanian Families

At number nine on the best selling toys list, are the highly collectible figurines known as Sylvanian Families.

The toy animal families were created in Japan by game manufacturers Kobo in 1985 and distributed world wide by several enthusiastic toy manufacturers including Tomy, who saw the potential appeal of the highly detailed figures and huge range of well made accessories including houses, furniture and vehicles.

The toys were so successful during the eighties that they were voted toy of the year by the British Association of Toy Retailers in 1987, 1988 and 1989 and this success was replicated during the nineties after the release of an animated TV show based on the Sylvanians.

The toy animal figures remain highly popular and collectible to this day, with early examples being much sought after by collectors.

10. Lego best selling blocks

By far the oldest toy to make it onto the top ten best sellers list, LEGO first went into production in 1949 and since that time an estimated 560 billion bricks have been manufactured.

A firm favourite with children everywhere, LEGO has been and probably always will be a best selling Christmas toy, thanks to the company’s ability to move with the times and produce themed play sets based around characters from popular culture such as Star Wars, Batman and even SpongeBob SquarePants.
